Accessing Reddit top posts using OAuth
Previously one can use the https://www.reddit.com/r/rprogramming/top.json API to access one subreddit's top posts. This API doesn't require any access token to fetch the data. However, this API may not work all the time. Reddit may block the API's request if it finds that you are using a script or some app which accesses the API now and then. For an app or script which needs to fetch the data routinely, what should we do? Reddit provides one method which can be used to fetch this kind of to...
An experience of fixing a memory-corruption bug
During the last 4 months, I was disturbed by a memory-corruption bug, and this bug will cause program crash. Until last Monday, I found the root cause and fixed it. This debug process is a difficult but memorable experience, so I will share it in this article. My program works as a SMS Hub. When it receives a SMS, it will allocate a structure in heap memory like this: typedef struct { ...... int *a[8]; ...... } info; After processing the SMS, the program will free the m...

Use DTrace to diagnose gdb issues
A few days ago, I installed the newest 64-bit gdb program (version 7.7.1) on Solaris 10 (X86_64 platform) to debug programs. After playing with the gdb a day, I found 2 issues about gdb:(1) The "set follow-fork-mode child" command doesn't take effect. By default, after the parent process forks the child process, the gdb will track the parent process, so this command can make gdb begin to follow the child process. But this command works OK on Linux.(2) The gdb can't parse the 32-bit application c...
Why Use Java?
Java was developed by Sun Micro-systems back in 1995 to function as high level programming language and serve as a computing platform. This gets regularly updated with new features and better compatibility. The latest version is Java SE 8.0 which released in 2014, March. Java has gained immense popularity while there have been various platforms to match up with the Java configurations like Java SE for Macintosh, Windows and UNIX, Java ME for Mobile Applications and Java EE for Enterpr...

Click and Drag on xkcd
xkcd is a webcomic created by Randall Munroe. The comic's tagline describes it as "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." Also some webcomics about IT may frequently appear on it. For example, the following one-- People who know Unix will understand it easily. In fact, xkcd is a Geek culture, many comics inside this site can only understood by some specified group of people. The comic began in September 2005 when Munroe decided to scan doodles from hi...

Where Have You Installed Your Python Packages?
Preface I am writing this article because I recently noticed in the Python community that there are several frequently asked questions: Why does running the command after installing pip result in a "executable not found" error? Why does importing a module result in a "ModuleNotFound" error? Why can I run my code in PyCharm, but it doesn't work in the command prompt? Rather than just providing solutions, it is better to teach people how to fish. To address these types of issues, you need to und...

The most stupid C bug ever
I have been programming for a number of years already. I have seen others introduce bugs, and I have also introduced (and solved!) many bugs while coding. Off-by-one, buffer-overflow, treating pointers as pointees, different behaviors or the same function (this is specially true for cross-platform applications), race conditions, deadlocks, threading issues. I think I have seen quite a few of the typical issues. Yet recently I lost a lot of time to what I would call the most stupid C bug in ...

What is goroutine?
Casual Talk Golang is quite enjoyable to write, aside from the tedious if err != nil checks. One of the fundamental reasons for the joy is goroutine, a core feature of Golang. Understanding goroutines in detail is worthwhile, as they contribute significantly to the pleasure of working with Golang. So, let's talk about goroutines, hoping to provide some insights to the readers. TL;DR: We'll start by talking about assembling a computer, then delve into some concepts of the operating system, such ...

How to make select in WinSock exceed the 64-socket limit
When doing cross-platform network programming, the only API available on Windows that corresponds to the epoll/kevent style reactor event model is select. However, it has a limitation: the number of sockets passed into select cannot exceed FD_SETSIZE, which is set to 64. Therefore, select in Java’s NIO on Windows also has the same limit. Many services ported to Windows that use the reactor model face this constraint, which often gives the impression that server programs on Windows hav...
