  Service discovery with etcd

In previous post, we have talked about etcd and its usage. This post we will cover how to implement server discovery with etcd. Service discovery is to solve one of the most commonly seen scenarios in distributed system where how to find the corresponding target service to talk to. In short, it is to find some server which one can talk to based on some service name. A complete service discovery system include below three key functions: Service registration: A service must register itself to so...

App's user value doesn't necessarily bring business value

There is an old saying in Internet world, you can get business value as long as you can achieve user value. Is this statement outdated in mobile Internet era? This statement originated from PC Internet era, but now the time users spend on PC drops and user behavior tends to be stable and conservative. In contrast, people are more willing to stay on mobile devices. The difference between PC and mobile is that users are freely to move around on PC end. People can navigate from one link to another ...

  Vim anti-patterns

The benefits of getting to grips with Vim are immense in terms of editing speed and maintaining your “flow” when you’re on a roll, whether writing code, poetry, or prose, but because the learning curve is so steep for a text editor, it’s very easy to retain habits from your time learning the editor that stick with you well into mastery. Because Vim makes you so fast and fluent, it’s especially hard to root these out because you might not even notice them...

  I hate cut-and-paste

Me, I blame the IDE's.Coding used to be hard. Not because programming itself was overly hard, but mostly because editors absolutely sucked. How much the typical development environment in the 70's and 80's sucked is hard to convey (except for a very lucky few, and those would have likely been using DEC and WANG gear). I got in on the tail end of the punch card era. Punching your own program is lots of fun. Once. And if you drop a deck you get to play with the sorter, which is also lots of fun (o...

  Do you really understand Geolocation?

LBS(Location based service) services continue to emerge, it seems that every product has some relationship with maps. But to be honest, do you really understand what is Geolocation? Not necessarily. Although lots of products have LBS service, they can be categorized as sign, search, navigation and information display, these are functional features of the map as a software should have. However, Geolocation is not software, it is just a functional feature, a functional feature of all LBS applicat...

Output a file with HTTP range header in PHP

When downloading a large file, we may encounter some network issues which causes download termination and only part of the file is downloaded. When the network connection resumes next time, we may need to redownload the file again from the beginning. In order to save bandwidth, http provides a Range parameter in its header which can control the file transfer flow. With the range parameter in the header, we can resume the download from where we stop. Here is a piece of PHP code snippet which uses...

  Ajax file upload tutorial

Step 1 - AJAX file uploadAJAX file upload tutorialFirst of all I have to say that to create a pure AJAX file upload system is not possible because of security limitations of JavaScript. All of the Ajax upload systems I know use some third party tool/package or only mimics the AJAX feeling. Even so it makes file upload process a bit nicer. In the next section I will present you a solution which imitates the AJAX process, but uses a normal upload process and iFrames. The concept: Create a simp...

This Is Why Your Website Is Slow

Click for a larger image Ghostery, the browser plugin that allows its users to "track the trackers," just released data on the tags, widgets and analytics on websites that are the worst in terms of slowing page loads to a crawl. Update: Ghostery discovered an error in their original data set. It appears that Millenial Media was not on this year's list at all, and the #2 slot belonged to AdFunky. Both the text and the graph above have been changed to reflect this. Any webmaster worth his or he...

  gethostbyname vs getaddrinfo

getaddrinfo is slower than ping when resolving domain names. I think ping uses gethostbyname to resolve a domain name. The question becomes whether getaddrinfo is slower than gethostbyname. After testing with both functions, we find that getaddrinfo is really slow compared to gethostbyname. By strace tracking,  we find getaddrinfo will communicate with DNS server 10 times and gethostbyname will communicate with DNS server communication twice.gethostbyname is an old way to resolve domain nam...
