Microsoft is filing a new patent about transparent display screen, it may be used on augmented reality technologies of tablets, phones and laptops. Similar to the scenes in the movie Minority Report.

Minority Report was showed in 2002, it described a world of 2054, at that time 3D technology is mature. But after 10 years of this movie, Microsoft not only invented the basis of this technology, but also make it more portable.

Patent Bolt recently revealed a patent application of Microsoft about transparent display device, it described the portable version of this transparent 3D display device. The patent is mainly about how to use 3D gestures and head movement tracking to navigate among files and applications. It said this patent can be used on small-sized laptops, phones, tablets and other mobile devices, to improve the augmented reality function.

The patent also describes various system configurations of transparent display devices, one of them is an image of a wine bottle and glass are displayed on the display and an image 204 of wine barrels are displayed on the additional transparent display 110 of the device. On the base display we see both the image of a wine bottle and glass. When the additional transparent display cover closes, the depth-of-field creates a visual 3-D effect that could be utilized to enhance a user experience for photos, images, graphics and motion video.

3 - combo transparent display could produce 3D images, video

According to Microsoft, this display configuration provides a wide viewing angle and, as an added benefit, a pseudo 3-D display of images doesn't involve special 3-D glasses for viewing, which limits viewer eyestrain because a viewer is looking at two separate displays, rather than one display with two separate images displayed on the one display.

Some previous reports mentioned that Microsoft is developing some light weight systems. And also Intel demonstrated their laptops with transparent touch screen on CES this year in US.
