Twitter recently made a commitment that they would sponsor the Apache Software Foundation, it will become its official sponsor. The Apache Software Foundation is a nonprofit organization, it can provide the organization and management, legal and financial support for open source projects.

As we all know, Twitter loves open source, and its engineers are often engaged in open source community to provide technical support. Twitter team is also responsible for the related construction of the open source community, including startup program for websites, applications,  and toolkit support.

Twitter in an official statement said:

Sponsoring the ASF is not only the right thing to do, it will help us sustain our existing projects at the ASF by supporting the foundation’s infrastructure. We have a long history of contributing to Apache projects, including not only Mesos, but also Cassandra, Hadoop, Mahout, Pig and more. As Twitter grows, we look to further our commitment to the success of the ASF and other open source organizations.

Starting today, we will abide by our commitment and look forward to the Apache Software Foundation to contribute more to society.

Twitter needs the prosperity of the Apache open-source foundation, the development of Twitter  depends on Mesos of Apache Software Foundation, the existence of Mesos makes it easier for Twitter's equipment and analytical processing.

Recently, many companies such as Microsoft and Twitter have showed their concern on pushing Open Source community forward. They promised to contributing to open source projects, not only money but also human resource. This is good news for developers and companies, because these big companies usually have best practice on software development, they can share their best practice and experience to the open source community so that developers can learn from them. Also this will help these software companies because some of their own products may depend on some excellent open source projects.
