Project Ara, Another of Google’s Speculation. This time for modular phones
Google is very adamant with the test of their new modular phones, nicknamed as Project Ara. The company is auspicious about the new concept where consumers can design their own phones by assembling parts from different manufacturers. The company is hopeful that there will be 20 to 30 interchangeable parts.
The device is expected to be targeted to diverse customers. For consumers with low disposable income, it’s a gadget that they would like to hold on to, because like PCs, upgradeability is Ara’s paramount. Conversely, the phone might appeal to people who take smartphone as a status symbol.
The project is coordinated by Google’s Advanced Technology and Project’s (ATAP) unit. Google has revealed Puerto Rico as their test market, saying that the area has a diverse customer base. It is also planning to launch an online website from where customers can choose their modules (DIY website for smartphones).
There is no news on the price of Ara as Google said that it will be detrimental to the manufacturers’ parts, where they are providing a frame for this idea to work and a software that is compatible with different parts from various vendors.
