Apple is catching up with Samsung in smart connected device market

According to Sina Tech. IDC's latest report shows that as of the end of 2012, Samsung has a 21.2% share of the global market on smart connected devices which is #1. Apple has a 20.3% share which ranks #2.

In smart connected devices market, Apple is catching up with Samsung. These devices include desktop computers, laptops, smart phones and tablet PCs. However, because of the higher prices,  Apple is still far ahead of Samsung in revenue. As of the end of 2012, Apple's revenue accounts for 30.7% of the total revenue of the industry while Samsung accounts for only 20.4%.

According to the IDC report, in 2012, global smart connected devices industry grew nearly 30%, the Tablet PC sales grew by 78.4%. Tablet PC shipments were more than 128 million units last year. IDC is very optimistic about the sales growth of the Tablet PC, Tablet PC sales are expected to be higher than sales of desktop PC and in 2014 they will exceed laptops.

IDC predicts that desktop PC sales this year will be down 4.3%, laptop sales will be slightly landslide Tablet PC sales will have a growth of 48.7% year-on-year, smartphone sales will grow by 27.2%.

Currently, most of the growth comes from the emerging markets. Smart connected devices in this market last year, shipments had a year-on-year growth of 41.3%, Tablet PC shipments had a year-on-year growth of 111.3%. Due to the decline in desktop PC sales and lower growth rate in mature markets. IDC expects this trend will continue this year.

The IDC analyst Meght Saini said that the PC market was facing increased pressure significantly and we would soon see the upgrade cycle become longer which would put pressure on PC sales.
