Google's acquisition of Quickoffice threatens Microsoft
Google suddenly announced the acquisition of QuickOffice on 6 June, this is a strong signal that Google will confront Microsoft in Microsoft's core business Office products. Google now possesses a powerful weapon which can occupy other platforms where Microsoft cannot occupy. Users can have a substitute of MS Office on other platforms, and more importantly this substitute can allow them backup files on the cloud. Although MS Office is available on Windows Phone and Windows Tablet, but as we know that Windows Phone is far behind Android in smartphone market.
Quickoffice is a proprietary productivity suite for mobile devices which allows users to view, create and edit text files, presentations and spreadsheets. Quickoffice is commonly used in smartphones and tablets, from Palm to Symbian to iOS to Android, and in the future, it will be available on Windows 8 or Windows RT. While MS Office can only run on Windows and Max OS, and there are compatibility issues in different versions. Google Docs is a lightweight substitute for Office, it can deal with some simple document process work, but it is far behind MS Office.
If Google integrates QuickOffice into their other products in the future, this may definitely threatens Microsoft. So we may expect a tough war between these two giants begins very soon.
